As the digital nomad crowd seems to be ever expanding, more people are looking for the perfect spot for a day of work. While some people prefer the quiet of their villa or room, others know that a place outside of that can be motivating and inspiring. This means a hunt for the hard to find a balance between good coffee, good company, good levels of background noises and, of course, good wifi. If you are in Canggu for a few days and do not fancy a race for that unicorn spot, we compiled some of our favorite cafes. So grab your laptop and your charger, hop on your scooter, we are going to work!
Places to Work Online in Canggu
Gypsy Cafe: Jalan Pura Batu Mejan, Gg. Munduk Catu No 1 Echo Beach Canggu, Canggu, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351
What we like: Good coffee, good breakfast menu, good wifi.
Gypsy cafe has a relaxed boho vibe for you to work in. Their breakfast menu goes on until 3pm, meaning that even if you have been a bit heavy on the Bintangs the night before in Old Man’s, they will have you prepped for your work day (afternoon?) with a solid breakfast and a detox juice. We especially recommend the pancake stack.
What we don’t like: Absolutely not their fault, but there is some roadwork outside at the moment. Don’t fret, it’s not loud. It won’t distract you. It should be finished very soon, restoring the picuresque vibe to this lovely spot!
Shady Shack: Jl. Tanah Barak No.57, Canggu, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351
What we like: Great decor, great veggie/vegan food, lovely gardens.
You probably heard of Shady Shack as it’s been in every single Instagram from Canggu. The little white house patio is adorned with chic chairs and cushions, hanging pot plants and fragrant “Jepun” (Frangipani flowers in Bahasa.) It may too popular for the cutting edge preferred, but you cannot beat the peaceful vibe in the lush garden. Wifi is decent and yes, you will be able to fill your stories with the beautifully presented food and drinks.
What we don’t like: At times, service can be really slow. The Halloumi breakfast was a disappointment when everything else was absolutely delicious.
Beach Garden by In The Raw: Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.103-107, Canggu, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali
What we like: Not only has this place got good internet, but it also has big tables which are very comfortable to work on. The staff is great, and we highly recommend their avocado on toast. While everywhere in Canggu seems to try their hand at adding a twist to a staple, Beach Garden gets it right with a papaya and feta combo.
In The Raw is a local brand of cold-pressed juice and Beach Garden is their cafe/flagship in Canggu. They service meals are for all dietary needs, not just raw or vegan.
What we don’t like: Not much really, always had a great time working there.
BGS: Jl. Munduk Catu No.1, Canggu, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361
What we like: Seriously good coffee, the best almond milk, great atmosphere.
BGS might be more of a quick “checking your emails” moment rather than tuning in for a long session, but it was hard to not mention this place as the coffee is amazing, and so is the staff. You’ll also find a great selection of clothing, jewelry, and surf accessories as BGS is also a surf shop. You’ll quickly meet the regulars, in for their daily coffee, a mixed crowd of graphic designers, writers, photographers, and marketers. Always great for a touch of networking.
What we don’t like: Again, not much, it does what it says on the tin, great coffee but no food, so you actually have to leave the place to refuel. Luckily, they will soon serve smoothie bowls just like their Uluwatu location.
GIVE: Jl. Padang Linjong No.85, Canggu, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351
What we like: A non-profit cafe with an amazing vegan Nasi Campur and a decorative terrace.
GIVE recently opened in July and is already a hot spot for the Canggu community. Entirely plant-based, GIVE is not only aesthetically pleasing with its candy pink facade and painted rainbows, but it also houses a great initiative. All of its profits from the restaurant is given back to the local community. Once you pay for your food, you are handed a token to drop in 1 of 3 boxes of your choice. One to help children, one to help find cleaner environment solutions, and one for aiding street dogs. Bonus: the terrasse is entirely shaded, meaning you can work outside without any sun flares!
What we don’t like: For a longer work session, the outdoor sitting is a bit rough on the back. No lumbar support here! (We know, details, but still)
Joshua District: Jalan kebo Iwa, Pangkung Tibah, Kediri, Pangkung Tibah, Kediri, Kabupaten Tabanan, Bali 82121
What we like: Great food, great atmosphere, amazing rice paddies and sea view.
Joshua District is a creative design concept restaurant hidden a little drive away from Canggu. If you’re willing to drive out, you have a unique work spot waiting for you.
Their hashtag #Notforeveryone is hard to believe with its combination of delicious food, quiet ambiance and endless views of rice paddies and the sea. Take the time to visit the art gallery downstairs to discover some unconventional modern artists.
What we don’t like: Apart from the 20 min drive from Canggu, there are very little downsides to paying a visit to Joshua District.
